Summer Mailers and Class Assignments:
The summer mailer complete with class assignments will be sent this week. If we don't have the correct mailing address, you may not receive your information. Please verify your information with the secretaries if you have any concerns.
5-9th grade students should come to registration on August 3rd or 4th 11-6pm. This year all registration will be in the secondary gym. Both buildings will be open for students to try out locker combinations, and find assigned classrooms in their schedules. Pictures will also be taken so students will need to be in the uniform top for ID pictures.
Summer Activities and Hours at OPA:
July 18th- Aug. 1st: Office Hours Monday-Thursday, 10-2pm
July 25th Class Lists will be posted at the Elementary for the 2016-17 School Year.
Aug. 1st: Regular Office Hours begin again for the 2016-17 School Year.
Aug. 3-4th 11-6pm is registration for 5th-9th grade students in the OPA Secondary Gym
August 15th First Day of School, Classes Begin.
August 18th Student-Led Back to School Night, 5-7pm
Calendar/School Hours/After School Activities:
The 2016-17 Calendar can be accessed in the links provided on the left side. The school opens at 7:30 and breakfast is served at that time. The school closes at 3:30 for all students not involved in supervised after school programs. After-school activities at OPA are sponsored by both teachers and parents. Some examples of these activities are cross-country, volleyball, girls and boys basketball, soccer, archery, book clubs, Lego club, and young runners club.
YMCA will be with us again next year at the elementary and a pilot program at the secondary building. We are excited to provide the space for this great program and if you are interested, just ask about the YMCA benefits!
Communication Goals: For the 2016-17 School Year, one of OPA's goals is to communicate activities, current grades, upcoming assignments, celebrations or concerns with our parents. It is expected that all teachers communicate weekly, or if a student's academic or social progress is diminishing. There should also be This communication may come in a weekly email, a blog or their personal google site. In addition, Aspire (our student grading system) will be updated weekly to inform students and parents of their personal progress.
As the principal of OPA, my communication will be in this blog format with the link emailed to all parents or listed contacts bi-weekly. I am excited to share the activities and progress at OPA. Remember that if we don't have correct contact information in Aspire we will not be able to communicate properly.
Uniforms are the required dress code at OPA. Shirts: Navy, Light Blue, White collared polo-type shirts and Bottoms: Navy, or Khaki Tan pants, shorts, skirts, skorts, or jumpers. No Jeans, no hoodie sweatshirts or sweaters, no jeggings, and natural non-distracting hair colors. All uniform tops are on display in the lobbies of each building and OPAPO will collect old uniforms for exchange.
Spanish Language Acquisition:
Intensive Spanish Classrooms:
For grades 1-4, a specific homeroom teacher has been assigned to the Intensive Spanish classroom. These assignments will rotate from year to year. 5th and 6th grade students in the Intensive Spanish class will be scheduled into the Intensive Spanish classroom, and they will receive their Social Studies instruction in Spanish.
Exposure Spanish Classrooms:
ALL grades and ALL non-intensive classes will receive a level of exposure Spanish. Exposure Spanish will offer 2.5 hours of Spanish instruction each week.
Procedures in the spring to enroll a student in the Intensive Spanish Classroom:
1st grade: Parents should have already requested the Intensive Spanish Classroom, if desired, by filling out the form (Parent Request for Intensive Spanish) last spring. Intensive Spanish students were randomly selected. Students who were not selected were placed on a waiting list. Waiting lists will be reset each year.
2nd grade: 2015-16 Intensive Spanish students will be enrolled in Intensive classes, unless otherwise indicated. If a student was not in the Intensive Spanish classroom previously, parents should have requested the Intensive Spanish Classroom, if desired, by filling out the form (Parent Request for Intensive Spanish) last spring. Intensive Spanish students will be randomly selected. Students who are not selected will be placed on a waiting list. Waiting lists will be reset each year.
3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th grades: 2015-16 Intensive Spanish students will be enrolled in Intensive classes, unless otherwise indicated. Additions to the Intensive Spanish classroom will be done through Spanish fluency assessment only.
Leader in Me
Data Notebooks: All students will be provided a “Data Notebook,” as part of the Leader in Me. Students in K-6, will be setting and tracking goals both personal and academic. Then students will use their notebooks to lead their own parent-teacher conferences.
School-wide Goals: As a school (K-6), we will striving to 1) return all homework assigned on time, and 2) Increase daily reading minutes. Each classroom teacher will explain these school wide goals upon return to school.
Student Leadership: OPA will have two Eagle Teams again this year, that will plan and lead activities such as assemblies, social action projects and awards systems.
-At the elementary students will be asked to “apply” by writing a letter describing how they use one of the 7 Habits, and why they should be on the Eagle Team. Each classroom (homeroom) will select the first Eagle. Each quarter a new Eagle will be added from each classroom.
-In the secondary, we have added a Leadership course taught by Stephanie Mathers, that is designed to build a leadership team that helps students to plan and drive school activities.
